It was in the mid-1970s when Nuremberg textile entrepreneur Hans Rudolf Wöhrl founded Nürnberger Flugdienst (NFD), laying the foundation for what would later become Eurowings.
The first ATR 72 propeller aircraft with their orange-red stripes shaped the apron at Nuremberg Airport and brought an upswing in regional travel. Today’s Eurowings simmered on February 1, 1993 from the merger of NFD and Dortmunder Reise- und Industrieflug (RFG). The Eurowings started with 32 destinations in 11 countries, but the focus on domestic German connections. The name « Eurowings » was won by an employee in the course of an ideas competition, the logo was designed by students of the Nuremberg Art Academy. In 2001 the Lufthansa Group became involved. Today, the Lufthansa subsidiary’s fleet comprises more than 100 aircraft and flies to over 140 destinations in over 50 countries. Among other things, Mallorca is headed for from Nuremberg – the favorite island in the Nuremberg metropolitan region.
