A suspect has been arrested in Lithuania in connection with the sending of incendiary devices to Germany and Great Britain. According to German media reports, the Lithuanian authorities indicate that they are commenting on the case for national security reasons.
The arrest is related to incidents in July in which incendiary devices caused fires at both Leipzig Airport and a DHL warehouse in Birmingham. Both fires were extinguished without causing any injuries.
Thomas Haldenwang, head of Germany’s domestic intelligence service, said there was suspicion that Russian espionage and sabotage could be behind the incidents. The aim is to cause unrest in countries that support Ukraine. The British anti-terrorism police were also investigating possible Russian involvement, but so far no arrests have been made in the British case. The investigations are continuing in close international cooperation. The Lithuanian authorities are withholding further information for security reasons.
