With approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Slovakia-based wet lease specialist Air Explore has reached a significant milestone. The company has been granted permission to operate commercial flights to and from the United States, as well as within the United States.
This decision not only marks a decisive step in Air Explore’s expansion strategy, but also a significant step forward for its parent company, Avia Solutions Group (ASG), the world’s largest provider of ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance) services.
The approval of the Foreign Air Carrier Permit (FACP) comes just one year after ASG acquired Air Explore in June 2023 and comes at a critical moment for the airline. As part of the Avia Solutions Group, which is headquartered in Dublin, Air Explore is now able to serve the increasing demand for air transport services in the US, representing a significant expansion of its previous area of operations, which was primarily focused on Europe.
« This is a fantastic moment for Air Explore, » commented Martin Stulajter, CEO of Air Explore, in new development. He stresses that the support of ASG has not only provided the airline with valuable know-how, but also access to the best practices in the industry. The permission to operate not even in the US is direct proof of the benefits that come from this collaboration.
Wet-Lease: An emerging business model
Air Explore established this foundation in 2010 as a leading provider of wet lease flights. This model sees an airline providing another operator with a fully equipped aircraft, including crew, maintenance and insurance. This business model has proven itself during peak season or when unexpected capacity shortages occur and is widely used in the industry.
The decision to expand the wet lease business to the US market is significant for Air Explore. The requirements for safety and regulation in the US are notoriously strict. The fact that Air Explore has overcome these hurdles shows the authorities’ confidence in the airline’s capabilities. These are not Air Explore’s first steps in the US, but also increase the trust and international partners in the company.

With an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) in Slovakia, Air Explore is in a strong position to enter new markets and continue to build its business.
Fleet and current operations
Air Explore’s fleet currently consists of 17 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, of which nine are used for passenger flights and eight for cargo flights. The company recently added three Boeing 737-800 freighters to its fleet to meet the increasing demands of the cargo business. Air Explore’s aircraft are currently operating on behalf of several well-known airlines including Jet2, Pegasus Airlines, Enter Air and TUI Airways. In addition, aircraft are expected to be delivered to Air Peace in Nigeria by the end of 2024.
The expansion into the US market and the strengthening of cargo capacities reflect the increasing importance of Air Explore within the global aviation industry. The airline has asserted itself in a highly competitive market and expanded its customer base.
